Newly appointed PCB president Mohsin Naqvi will be eyeing assurances given by BCCI secretary Jay Shah during next week’s ICC meeting in Dubai regarding India’s participation in next year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan, but progress is unlikely at the moment. The International Cricket Federation’s executive committee will meet in Dubai next week and Naqvi is scheduled to speak to the top brass of the global body as well as the Indian board’s top boss Shah on the sidelines, but for the meeting, which is scheduled to take place in February-March 2025 tournament, it is unlikely that the Indian committee will make any immediate commitment to Pakistan with almost a year left. While the Champions Trophy is an International Cricket Confederation (ICC) event and all other cricketing nations will be traveling to Pakistan, the BCCI will not close the door completely but the Indian government will not issue any clearance at least a few weeks before the tournament starts.

Citing the “hybrid model” used last year, a PCB source said, “The PCB’s biggest concern is whether India will send a team to Pakistan and that the issue of last year’s Asia Cup will not be repeated.” It could not send a team to Pakistan without the approval, so the PCB was forced to agree to a sharing scheme under which it hosted four Asia Cup matches, with the remaining matches being held in Sri Lanka. its government.

“This is an event for the ICC and Pakistan went to India last year for the World Cup. Naqvi will try to convince the ICC and BCCI that they need to confirm that India will come to Pakistan at the earliest as it will help promote CT for For them,” the source added.

“Naqvi will try his best to assure the BCCI representatives that with the (Pakistani) elections completed and the new government in place, there will be no security or other issues for them to play in Pakistan.” India last visited Pakistan in 2008. India participated in the Asian Cup at that time. Since then, Pakistan has traveled to India three times to participate in the ICC World Cup, namely in 2011 (ODI World Cup), 2016 (T20 World Cup) and 2023 (ODI World Cup).

Sources said Naqvi will also brief the ICC board about the upgrade of stadiums in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi, as well as the Pakistan government’s stance on India’s matches in Pakistan.

When BCCI sources were asked, he gave a standard reply.

“To play in Pakistan is a matter that only the Indian government can decide and the BCCI has to abide by the government’s orders. And it is too early to seek permission from the government if their new president expects to have the tournament in March 2024.” Guaranteed February-March 2025, he was wrong,” BCCI sources said.
