Paris Saint-Germain are on course to repeat as Ligue 1 champions after beating Lyon 4-1 on Sunday, the same scoreline as they beat Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek. All the goals came in the first half at the Parc des Princes, with Nemanja Matic’s own goal and Lucas Berardo’s strike giving PSG a two-goal lead within six minutes. Goncalo Ramos then added two goals apiece to Ernest Nuama’s goal as the Parisians eased through despite Kylian Mbappe being on the bench all night victory.

PSG have not lost a Ligue 1 match since September and now lead second-placed Monaco by 11 points with just five games remaining.

This means that if they beat Lorient in Wednesday’s rescheduled game and Monaco fail to beat Lille at the same time, they will claim their 10th Ligue 1 title in 12 seasons.

“I’m very happy with the result, the game and the week,” PSG coach Luis Enrique told Amazon Prime.

In last Tuesday’s 4-1 away win over Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, the team made five substitutions, resting Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembélé.

“After the Barcelona game you never know what’s going to happen, but I think the team was very precise and I’m very confident and very happy.”

Lyon have enjoyed a remarkable renaissance under new coach Pierre Sage over the past few months and remain hopeful of qualifying for Europe after finishing bottom of the table at the end of November.

However, they were stunned six minutes later when Matic turned Asensio’s cutback into his own net and Brazilian defender Berardo scored from the corner to make it 2-0.

After half an hour, Ramos scored with a header from Achraf Hakimi’s cross to make it 3-0, while Ghanaian star Nuama scored a goal for Lyon with a supplementary shot from the right wing.

Ramos restored PSG to a three-goal cushion just before the break with a superb strike, his 13th goal of the season in all competitions.

That completes the goal and, whatever happens in midweek, PSG will be hoping to be confirmed as title winners ahead of their Champions League semi-final first leg against Borussia Dortmund on May 1.

Lyon are one point adrift of seventh place, which will be enough to qualify for Europe if they fail to beat PSG when they meet again in the Coupe de France final at the end of May.

Monaco ranks second

Monaco defeated Brest 2-0 in an away game earlier and advanced to second place. The two teams compete for Champions League qualification.

Swiss midfielder Denis Zakaria and Japan’s Minamino Takumi each scored a goal at halftime.

Monaco held on for victory despite Eliese Bensegier and Wilfried Thingo both being sent off in stoppage time.

The Principality’s side’s three-game winning streak sees them ready to move on and automatically qualify for next season’s Champions League, a competition they have not competed in since 2018/19.

They are two points ahead of Brest and three ahead of fourth-placed Lille, who beat Strasbourg 1-0 on penalties in the Europa League in midweek and were beaten by Aspen on penalties. Donvilla eliminated.

Canada’s Jonathan David scored the only goal of the game, taking his tally in Ligue 1 to 17 this season.

The fourth-placed team will enter next season’s Champions League preliminaries.

Marseille earned a point from a 2-2 draw with Toulouse thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Cameroon forward Faris Mombagna.

Mombagna also scored as Marseille beat Benfica in a penalty shootout on Thursday and advanced to the Europa League semi-finals.

However, they are now winless in four league games and sit ninth, meaning they are likely to have to win the Europa League to qualify for Europe again next season.

Jordan’s Moussa Tamari scored a late winner as Montpellier won 2-1 in Reims while Metz won 1-0 at Le Havre to escape the relegation zone.

Normandy took their place and dropped into the bottom three.
