Gunmen in northern Nigeria abducted dozens of schoolchildren on Thursday in what would be the largest abduction of a school so far in 2021, residents and parents of missing children said.
There was no immediate comment from the Kaduna State Police on the abduction, which occurred shortly after a morning assembly at the local government education authority school in Kuriga town.
It’s unclear how many students were removed.
Salisu Ahmed Kuriga said, “As we speak, people are writing down the names of children who went to school today but did not come back. Only after these statistics can we Know exactly how many people are missing. The brother is missing.
Parents said the gunmen arrived at the school and began shooting sporadically before abducting dozens of students and disappearing into the bush.
The school accommodates primary and secondary school students.
“We don’t know what to do, we are all waiting to see what God can do. They are my only children on earth,” Fatima Usman, her two children, told Reuters by phone A child was also among the abductees.
Another parent, Hassan Abdullahi, said local vigilantes tried to fight off the gunmen but were overpowered.
Abdullahi said: “Seventeen of the kidnapped students are my children. I feel very sad that the government has completely ignored us in this regard.”
Kidnappings for ransom by armed men have become common in northern Nigeria, disrupting daily life and keeping thousands of children out of school.
The last major kidnapping incident involving schoolchildren occurred in June 2021, when gunmen attacked a school in the northwestern Kebbi state and abducted more than 80 students.
