Nearly one in 10 Papa John’s pizza stores in the UK will close in a bid to boost the company’s profits.

A total of 43 of its 450 sites across the country were found to be “underperforming” or “underperforming” and were said to be no longer financially viable.

After notifying affected employees, Papa John’s said the sites would be shut down in mid-May.

The company did not reveal how many jobs would be lost; how many people worked at the sites; nor how many staff it employed across the UK.

“Our priority is our team members and they will have full support throughout the process,” said Chris Phylactou, managing director of Papa John’s UK.

“Our goal is to work with affected team members and attempt to identify possible redeployment opportunities.”

Mr Phylacto said the move would allow Papa John’s to “invest in the right locations with the right partners”.

“We are committed to driving shared profit growth in our UK restaurants by continuing to improve our business to ensure we are well-positioned for the future.

“We are encouraged by the results of these initiatives so far,” he added.

In the last three months of 2023, the company’s global sales exceeded £1 billion.

The pizza chain said it has increased investment in product innovation, training and technology, and research and technology in the UK to improve customer experience.

The company said it will announce new store openings at “large retail partners” in addition to traditional stores “in the coming months.”
