Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has decided to restructure the national selection committee to give it more independence and power to appoint captains and teams. “I don’t want to be involved in appointing captains, teams etc. I will restructure the national selection committee and will give it more powers and independence to take cricket-related decisions,” cricket board chairman Mohsin Na Mohsin Naqvi said during a cricket match on Monday. A press conference is held here.
“The revamped selection committee will recommend the captain and the team after discussions with the team’s head coach. I hope the selection committee, coach and captain will independently take a decision that they think is best for the Pakistan team.
“My job is to manage the board affairs properly and facilitate the players,” he added.
Naqvi said the board was in final talks with candidates to take over as Pakistan head coach.
“Our team is talking to this individual and I don’t want to reveal his name until everything is finalized,” he said.
“We are also in talks with Shane Watson and one of the reasons why he did not accept the offer is that a lot of things were leaked in the media, most of which were incorrect.” Naqvi said he hopes to improve Domestic cricket structure, setting up a system where talented players are not only discovered early on but are given a chance to play and prepared for the future.
“As far as the Pakistan team is concerned, it doesn’t matter to me if we win some or lose some, but everyone wants to see 100 per cent commitment and players giving their best on the field,” he said.
Currently, Wahab Riaz, a former Test pacer, serves as the chairman of the national selection committee, which also includes a number of other former Test players including Kamran Akmal, Tao Tauseef Ahmed, Rao Iftikhar.
Since the PCB chief has great trust in Wahab, he is expected to retain the post of chief electoral officer or get a higher post. The two had worked together in the Punjab government when Naqvi was caretaker chief minister.
