Kolkata, October 25 (IANS) The West Bengal Food Department will start purchasing paddy from farmers at the beginning of the Kharif season on November 1. A senior government official gave this information on Saturday.
It has been told that after selling paddy at the government purchasing centre, farmers will get the price of paddy within a maximum of three working days. The money will come directly into the bank accounts of the farmers. According to the official, this initiative has been taken to ensure that there is no delay in getting the money to the farmers after the sale of paddy.
The government will purchase paddy for the 2025-26 season across the state from November 1.
To collect this paddy, the Food Department is starting 620 permanent purchasing centers. Apart from this, there will be about 179 mobile permanent purchasing centres, which will mainly go to remote areas and purchase paddy from farmers.
These mobile centers will play a major role especially where it is difficult for farmers to reach nearby permanent purchasing centres.
At the same time, during the Kharif season, temporary paddy procurement camps will be organized at various places. These camps will be managed by various government agencies.
According to the guidelines issued by the Food Department, the agencies will have to inform the Food Department about the purchase of paddy in the temporary camp the next day. The Food Department will verify that information and send the money to the farmer’s bank account soon.
Farmers will get Rs 2369 per quintal by selling paddy in this season. Apart from this, the state government has decided to give an additional bonus of Rs 20 on selling paddy at government purchasing centres. Thus, the farmer will get a total of Rs 2,389 per quintal.
However, online registration for the sale of paddy has been made mandatory by the Food Department. Farmers will have to go to the designated purchasing center on the designated day and sell paddy.
The official said, ‘If for some reason it is not possible to reach on the scheduled day, re-booking should be done.’
It is noteworthy that these four months from November to February are considered to be the busiest and important time for paddy procurement.
