Steve Darling MP, a spokesman for Liberal Democrat Work and Pension, said: “Countless children are being forced to grow up unnecessarily in unnecessarily difficult situations until this hat remains.
“The government needs to declare that they will scrap this cap as it is the best way to give children out of poverty and give them the best opportunity to succeed in life.”
A government spokesperson said that they are “firm to give all children the best start in life”.
He said: “Children’s poverty taskforce will publish an ambitious strategy later this year to ensure that we will distribute fully funded measures that deal with structural and root causes of child poverty across the country.”
