An osprey that became an internet star during the first coronavirus lockdown has received its earliest eggs of the season in the Scottish Highlands.

Louis and his mate Dorcha migrated from the south back to their nest in the Arkaig Lake Pine Forest in Lochaber on March 28 and 30 respectively.

The first egg of the season was laid on Sunday morning, a week earlier than the forest’s previous record.

The moment was captured on the Scottish Woodland Trust’s live nesting camera, which recorded 400,000 views of the video while Louise was nesting with her previous partner in 2020.

The trust’s George Anderson said the pair had returned much earlier than usual this year and the group was not sure why, although it could have been because of the good weather along the route from the west. Africa.

“The earliest Arkaig eggs we had seen before was on April 21, so this is a full week earlier than usual,” he added.

“Fingers crossed they’ll lay three full eggs next weekend.

“If all goes well, our chicks will hatch in late May. They will fly in July and cross the continent in late summer.

“That magic never goes out of style.”
