Orissa police inspector booked for sexually assaulting female colleague

The Odisha crime branch has registered a case against a police inspector for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman sub-inspector (SI) in 2019, a senior police officer said on Sunday.

Odisha Police Chief (In-Charge) Arun Sarangi said the accused inspector has been booked on the instructions of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

“The incident occurred in 2019. According to the complaint, the police inspector sexually assaulted the victim at the workplace.” The female SI reported the incident to the police station. However, no action was taken,” Sarangi told reporters here.

She then submitted a petition to the National Human Rights Commission and the matter was subsequently investigated by the Police Service’s Internal Complaints Committee and a panel of the National Human Rights Commission.

He informed that the commission has directed the police to register a case and initiate investigation based on the complaint lodged by the victim.

Accordingly, the police have registered a case against the police inspector and asked a deputy superintendent of police (DSP)-level woman police officer to investigate the sexual harassment angle of the case.

The attorney general said other officers would investigate other allegations made by the woman.
