Oppo Reno 11 series to launch generative AI features soon, AI center arrives

The Oppo Reno 11 series will soon come with features based on generative artificial intelligence (AI), the company said on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Chinese smartphone maker also revealed that it has established an artificial intelligence center to promote innovation in emerging technologies. The agency will focus on bringing new features to its existing smartphones and building AI-enabled phones in the future. Earlier this week, Oppo added several AI features to its ColorOS New Year update in China.

In announcing the news, the company emphasized that the OPPO Artificial Intelligence Center will become its dedicated R&D department focused on artificial intelligence and its applications. It will also bring a wider range of user-centric artificial intelligence products and capabilities to users around the world. This hints that OPPO may launch dedicated AI hardware similar to Humane’s AI Pin and Rabbit R1.

While this will be a long-term development for the company, in the short term, Oppo is bringing new AI features to its Reno 11 series, which includes the regular Reno 11 and Reno 11 Pro. There is no mention of the list of features that the smartphone may have, but it has been revealed that an AI eraser tool that can remove unwanted objects and people from the background of images will be added to the range. The Chinese brand also emphasized that the artificial intelligence capabilities will be launched globally within the second quarter of 2024, which ends in June.

“Following feature phones and smartphones, the next generation of AI smartphones will represent the third major transformation stage in the mobile phone industry. In the era of AI smartphones, both the mobile phone industry and user experience will undergo revolutionary changes,” Liu Zuohu said. OPPO Chief Product Officer.

In addition, OPPO also outlined four important pillars of an ideal AI smartphone. It emphasizes the efficiency of using computing resources to meet the needs of generating artificial intelligence, self-learning capabilities and multi-modal content generation capabilities. The company said AI-powered smartphones should also sense the physical world in real time through various sensors to understand the user and their environment.

Finally, the company has also taken a deep dive into its own AI stack. In January, OPPO Find X7 series was released, adding AI functions for the first time. Explaining the language model behind the AI, the smartphone maker revealed that it uses its in-house AndesGPT, which contains 180 billion parameters. The AI model is built with conversation enhancement, personalization and cloud device collaboration in mind.
