New federal data says that in 2024, Canada has fallen by 17 percent in Canada in 2024.
But they increased in the same period in Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador and Northwest Territies.
A new report by the Canadian Center on drug abuse and addiction stated that despite the decline in deaths in Canada, deaths due to opioid poisoning remain “too much”.
In 2024, Canada had 7,150 clear opioid related deaths, which were an average of 20 per day.
British Columbia reported the most deaths with 2,299; Ontario saw 2,231 deaths, and Alberta reported the deaths of 1,181 opioids-but all three provinces reported a decline compared to 2023.
In 2024, Quebec was ranked fourth with 645 deaths, over 536 in 2023 – and more than double the number of deaths in 2022.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, 45 people died in 2024 due to a clear opioid death, above 37 in 2023.
Northwest Territories reported six deaths last year, growing three in 2023 by three.
