(Reuters) – Microsoft-backed OpenAI has signed a deal with Arizona State University as the ChatGPT owner looks to expand its partnership beyond technology and media firms.
The university said Thursday it will get access to ChatGPIT Enterprise, a version of the viral chatbot that offers more security, privacy and high-speed access to OpenAI’s technology.
This development stands in contrast to early alarm in academic circles, when OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT raised fears that the technology’s sophisticated, human-like responses could be misused.
ASU President Michael Crow said, “ASU believes that augmented and artificial intelligence systems are here to stay, and we are optimistic about their potential to become incredible tools that help students learn.”
Last year, the company partnered with the American Journalism Project and news publisher Associated Press, after which OpenAI has entered the field of education.
“We look forward to learning from ASU and working toward expanding ChatGPT’s impact in higher education,” said Brad Lightcap, Chief Operating Officer of OpenAI.
Starting in February, ASU will run an open challenge inviting faculty and staff to submit their ideas about best use scenarios.
The university said OpenAI will not use ASU’s data for its training models and will ensure that the signals are kept private and secure.
