Sam Altman says AI consumes too much energy, and nuclear fusion could be the way out.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, believes a breakthrough in energy is essential to the future of AI, which is expected to require more electricity than initially thought.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Tuesday that an energy breakthrough is necessary for future artificial intelligence, which will consume more power than people expect.

Speaking at a Bloomberg event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Altman said the silver lining is that more climate-friendly sources of energy, particularly nuclear fusion or cheap solar power and storage, could lead to AI. There is a way to move forward.

“There’s no way to get there without success,” he said. “This motivates us to invest more in fusion.”

In 2021, Altman personally provided $375 million to private American nuclear fusion company Helion Energy, which has since signed a deal to provide energy to Microsoft in future years. Microsoft is the largest financial supporter of OpenAI and provides it with computing resources for AI.

Altman said that he wishes the world would also adopt nuclear fission as an energy source.
