Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condoled the death of lawmaker Fali S Nariman and said he had dedicated his life to making justice accessible to common citizens.
Legal expert and veteran lawyer Nariman died on Wednesday in Delhi at the age of 95. He was suffering from several ailments including heart problems.
In a post on Twitter, Modi said: “Shri Fali Nariman ji was among the most outstanding legal minds and intellectuals. He dedicated his life to making justice accessible to common citizens.” The Prime Minister said, “I am saddened by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and fans. May his soul rest in peace.”
In his long and illustrious legal career, Nariman argued many landmark cases, including the famous National Judicial Appointments Commission case, which was struck down by the Supreme Court.
Born on January 10, 1929, Nariman served as Additional Solicitor General between 1972 and 1975. He resigned from the post during the Emergency.
Nariman received the Padma Bhushan in January 1991 and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2007.
His son, Rohinton Nariman, was a Supreme Court judge.
