Kolkata, Oct 23 (IANS) The desecration of the Kali idol in Kakdwip area of South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal was an isolated and local incident and has no connection with any political motive, police said on Thursday. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident that took place at a temple in Suryanagar gram panchayat in Kakdwip, he said.

The man has been identified as Narayan Halder who allegedly damaged the statue while in an inebriated state. According to the police, the man has confessed to the crime.

West Bengal Police said in a social media post, “Based on intelligence, a man named Narayan Halder (28), son of Bhupati Halder, was caught and arrested. During interrogation, he confessed to his involvement and expressed remorse for his actions. It was determined that he was in an intoxicated state during the incident, which led to desecration of the idol.”

Police further said that investigation is ongoing and the case is being sent to court.

“Further efforts are underway to identify and nab others involved. Prima facie, the incident appears to be a local disturbance, with some mischievous elements trying to spread misinformation,” the police said.

Police appealed to people not to believe or spread rumors regarding the incident.

It said, “We reiterate that the sanctity of Maa Kali is of paramount importance for us. We urge all citizens not to believe or spread rumors and assure that the police will take every necessary step to maintain peace and protect religious sentiments.”
