The Sapigen Biologix vaccine plant in Odisha, the first of its kind in the state, will start commercial production in May this year, officials said on Sunday. Chairman 5T and Nabin Odisha VK Pandian visited the facility.

The plant at the Andalua Biotech Park will be able to produce 240 million doses of different vaccines every day. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said in a statement that the plant will be the largest vaccine manufacturing plant in the country when it reaches full capacity.

Pandian visited various subordinate units and interacted with management and employees. He directed state government agencies to assist in making the plant operational within the next three months.

More than 15 vaccines are expected to be produced for various diseases, including cholera and malaria. The CMO said the Rs 1,500-crore vaccine factory will create direct employment opportunities for 1,500 people, mostly local employees.

The various vaccines produced in Bhubaneswar will be supplied to many parts of the world, it added.

The project, led by renowned Dr. Krishna Ella of Bharat Biotech Park, is fully in sync with HCM and Odisha’s motto “Every Life is Precious”. With a vaccine here, millions of lives around the world will be protected.

Pandian has assured the government of all help and informed about the recently approved biotechnology policy, which has been approved by the cabinet of HCM Naveen Patnaik.

He expressed confidence that with this large anchor manufacturing facility, many other complementary biotechnology related product companies will be attracted to Odisha Biotechnology Park, bringing in huge investments and creating employment opportunities in this specialized area.
