A member of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) was killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Kamberikia forest under the jurisdiction of Bariguda police in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on Saturday night.
According to reports, after receiving a tip-off that some Maoists were camping in Kamberikia forest, Khandhamal SP Suvendu Kumar Patra formed a joint team of DVF soldiers and police to raid their hideout. As the soldiers approached the hideout, the Maoists started firing indiscriminately and one Maoist was killed in retaliatory firing by the troops.
Meanwhile, a DVF soldier also sustained gunshot wounds in his left hand, following which the remaining Maoists fled the area in the darkness.
The injured DVF Jawan was taken to Baliguda Hospital and later shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment.
Soldiers found the dead Maoist and seized a rifle and other incriminating documents from the spot.
Meanwhile, South Superintendent of Police Jayanarayan Pankaj told the media on Sunday that the deceased Maoist has been identified as Dasru alias Dudu Mundari, chief of the Maoist KKBN unit and also DVCM (divisional committee member).
Pankaj said Dasaru’s death in a police shooting on Saturday marked a serious blow to Maoist groups in the region. “Dasalu is suspected of murdering 10 people and is involved in about 22 criminal cases in Kandhamal and Budh districts,” he said.
