Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 (IANS) The opposition Congress party on Thursday filed a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha, demanding strict action against a web portal, its editors, their associates and social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook etc. for circulating defamatory and libelous content against Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das and his son Sagar Charan Das.
According to the complaint filed by the OPCC, the web portal, named “Focus Plus”, whose office is located at Saubhagya Nagar under Khandagiri police limits in Bhubaneswar since October 15, has been involved in spreading false, fabricated and baseless news against OPCC Chairman Das and his son through media platforms like “Youtube and Facebook” without any reasonable cause and legitimate basis.
The web portal has reportedly termed Das a ‘middleman’ or middleman and accused him of selling out the Congress party to its opponents.
The Congress party further claimed in its complaint that the editor of the web portal, in a video, also allegedly accused Das of ‘looting’ Rs 60 crore in the name of development of Kalahandi and accumulated properties in Chhattisgarh.
The editor of the above web portal, in connivance with one of his key associates, had circulated more than ten derogatory and derogatory news videos through YouTube and Facebook, which are extremely objectionable in nature.
In the said video, the web portal also reportedly alleged that Das has sold party tickets in the Telangana state assembly elections in 2023, and that he is enjoying a lavish lifestyle by booking three rooms at Hotel Mayfair throughout the year.
Terming the allegations made in the news as fabricated, ridiculous and shocking, the Congress party alleged that these videos have tarnished the impeccable image of the OPCC president, his son and the party.
The party also claimed that the circulation of such ‘irrational’ and ‘illegal allegations’ on social media platforms is affecting the chances of victory of Congress candidates in the Nuapada by-election to be held on November 11.
“Finally, we request your immediate intervention to take appropriate legal action against the above mentioned individuals and remove the offending content. We are available to provide any additional information required for your investigation. We await your prompt response and appropriate action,” the party demanded in the complaint.
