NIT professor’s ‘Pride of Godse’ comments: ABVP holds march seeking action

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party, held a protest march at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut on Monday, seeking action against a female professor who allegedly glorified Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse. action. NIT professor A Shaija was arrested by the police on Saturday for posting a comment on Facebook to “express pride” in Nathuram Godse for “saving India”.

ABVP activists marched to the institution and burned Godse’s effigies. ABVP leaders sought action against the professor, saying she had made comments insulting the Mahatma. Addressing ABVP activists, a student leader said, “The professor posted remarks that insulted the Father of the Nation and praised his assassin, Godse.”

On January 30, Shaija, a senior faculty member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at NIT, posted a comment on Facebook saying, “Proud of Godse for saving India.” She was commenting on a post by lawyer Krishna Raj, who posted a photo of Godse with the caption Hindu evangelical activist Nathuram Vinayak Go Nathuram Vinayak Godse, he is a hero in the hearts of many people in India. Several student organizations, including SFI, KSU and MSF, lodged multiple complaints against Professor Shaija at several police stations in the city, following which an FIR was registered against her.

IPC section 153 (wanton provocation with intent to cause disorder) was invoked against the professor. Kunnamangalam and Nadakkavu police stations were among the places where complaints were lodged against her.
