Nikki Haley to drop out of US presidential race: report

Donald Trump holds the lead in every other state in his bid for the Republican nomination.

Former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley is expected to close out the primary race, leaving Donald Trump as the sole Republican candidate for the presidential nomination, local media reported on Wednesday.

She is expected to announce her decision in a speech in Charleston, the capital of South Carolina, at around 15:00 GMT on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal and CNN said, citing sources. She served as governor of the state.

Before withdrawing from the race, the US leader unexpectedly defeated Donald Trump in the Republican primary in the US state of Vermont, her second victory in the 2024 White House race.

Donald Trump, 77, holds the lead in every other state in his bid for the Republican nomination. He celebrated an “amazing night” as he easily won the Super Tuesday primary to move closer to the Republican presidential nomination and a rematch with President Joe Biden in November.
