Nicola Sturgeon’s husband and former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has been arrested again amid a police investigation into the party’s funding and finances.

Mr Murrell was first arrested more than a year ago and police searched the couple’s home and set up a blue forensics tent outside.

On Thursday, Police Scotland said: “The man, who had been arrested as a suspect on April 5, 2023, was taken into custody at 9.13am and is being interviewed by Police Scotland detectives.

“This matter remains active under the Contempt of Courts Act 1981 and members of the public are advised to exercise caution when discussing this matter on social media.

“Due to the ongoing investigation, we are unable to comment further at this time.”

The police investigation, known as Operation Branchform, has been ongoing since July 2021.

Former party treasurer Colin Beattie and former first minister and ex-SNP leader Ms Sturgeon have both been arrested and released as part of the investigation.

The long-running investigation relates to spending of around £600,000 raised by SNP supporters earmarked for the Scottish independence campaign. It is understood there were complaints that the ring-fenced cash was being misused and spent elsewhere.
