An NHS doctor has urged people not to eat an entire Easter egg in one sitting, sparking a backlash on social media.
Dr Andrew Kelso has warned that tooth decay, obesity and type 2 diabetes are all on the rise, calling for moderation.
But one person responded on social media saying they were “taking two now”, while someone else wrote: “You are not my mum.”
A third said “Finally a Grinch for Easter”, while a fourth asked for “more specifics”, wondering if a Cadbury Creme Egg would be included.
Dr Kelso is Medical Director at NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board.
In an interview for a blog on the council’s website, he advised people to “resist the urge to eat the whole egg in one sitting”.
He added that many of us don’t realize that the average Easter egg contains about three-quarters of an adult’s recommended daily caloric intake.
Dr Kelso said if eggs were combined with cakes and cookies, “you’d be creating a lot of extra sugar and calories” that “didn’t do our bodies any good”.
“Enjoy your dessert,” he suggested. “But please don’t take it too far.”
Given that Easter is likely to be a “busy time for NHS staff and services”, he also urged people to make sure they have “paracetamol, plasters, indigestion medicines and anti-diarrhoeals”.
Those who responded to the post on X were not impressed.
One person wrote: “Technically it would be better for your teeth to eat everything at once,” while another wondered: “Does he see how small the teeth are now?”
Someone else asked: “Is this a spoof?”, while another respondent commented: “Is this a spoof account?”
