New Haryana chief minister asks governor to hold floor testing meeting

In the 90-member state assembly, the BJP has 41 members.

Haryana’s new chief minister Nayab Singh Saini said they have submitted a letter of support from 48 MLAs to the governor and asked him to convene a session of the Assembly on Wednesday so that India The PPP government was able to prove its majority in the House of Representatives.

Mr Saini was sworn in as chief minister on Tuesday, hours after the unexpected resignation of Manohar Lal Khattar and his cabinet ministers.

“We have urged the governor to convene the Assembly session tomorrow where we will prove our majority in the House of Representatives,” Saini told reporters after taking office and convening a cabinet meeting.

When asked how many MLAs supported the government, Saini, who is also Haryana BJP president, said: “We have sent a letter of support to the governor with 48 MLAs.”

The BJP has 41 MPs in the 90-member state assembly and also has the support of six of the seven independent MPs and Haryana Lokhit Party MP Gopal Kanda . JJP has 10 MLAs in the House of Representatives.

The main opposition Congress party has 30 MLAs, while the Indian National Party has 1 MLA.

The Janata Dal-JJP alliance has effectively broken down over disagreements over seat allocation for the Lok Sabha polls.

Saini said the cabinet meeting passed a resolution to thank the outgoing Khattar cabinet for its work.

“In the last nine-and-a-half years, he (Khartal) has given Haryana a new direction and set an example of good governance. ‘Haryana Ek Haryanvi Ek’ is not just a slogan but a way of achieving equity development. We are already working in the spirit of Antiodaya without discrimination,” Mr. Saini said.

He said the Khattar government had written history in many areas, be it the online transfer policy of teachers or merit-based employment.

Mr. Saini also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bharatiya Janata Party president JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the new charge given to him by the party.

“New responsibilities have been entrusted to me… We will work wholeheartedly to live up to people’s expectations,” he said.

He also said that challenges come with responsibilities and he is ready to face them.

Five MLAs (four from the BJP and one independent) were also sworn in as ministers. However, Anil Vij, former home minister and six-time MLA from Ambalakant, is yet to find a place in the new cabinet.

Mr. Saini, the 54-year-old OBC leader, was administered the oath by Governor Bandaru Dattatreya during a swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhawan.

Earlier in the day, Khattar and all 13 other members of the BJP-led council of ministers submitted their resignations to the governor as the party’s central observer team arrived in Chandigarh.
