Kathmandu:

Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ on Monday ended a nearly 15-month partnership with the Nepali Congress due to differences among the top leadership. It was decided to form a new alliance with the party of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

The alliance between the Prachanda-led Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) and Sher Bahadur Deuba-led Nepal Congress has been terminated, party leaders said. The growing differences between the top leaders reached a climax.

“Since the Nepali Congress is not cooperating with the prime minister, we are forced to find new alliances,” Ganesh Shah, secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist told PTI.

Prachanda took office as the third Prime Minister on December 25, 2022 with the support of the Nepali Congress Party.

After breaking with the Nepali Congress, the largest party in the House of Representatives, Prachanda joined hands with the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) led by Oli, who is seen as Prachanda’s top critic.

Last year, the CPN-UML withdrew its support for the Prachanda-led government amid disagreements over support for the main opposition presidential candidate.

Surendra Pandey, deputy chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-United Marxist-Leninist Party, said the new cabinet will be formed on Monday afternoon and the size of the cabinet will be reduced.

The rift between the Maoist Center and the Nepali Congress also widened after differences between the party leaders and Finance Ministers Mahatma Mahat and Prachanda widened over the budget allocation of certain projects.

As Nepali Congress Chairman Deuba wants the party’s senior leader and newly elected lawmaker Krishna Sitaula to serve as the Speaker of the National Assembly, there is opposition to Prachanda appointing party figures to key positions. plan, the differences are widening day by day.

Shah said CPN-UML chief Oli met Prachanda at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baruwata on Monday and discussed matters regarding the formation of a new alliance.

“According to sources close to Baluwatar, the two leaders discussed the formation of a new government, future course of action and a possible left-wing alliance,” Shah said.

Shortly after the meeting, leaders of three political parties including Prime Minister Prachanda, Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-United Marxist-Leninist Oli and Socialist Party member Ravi Ramichan met in Baruwatar to discuss the model of the new alliance and the new government. formation.

The Nepali Congress Party became the largest party in the House of Representatives in the November 2022 general election, winning 89 out of 275 seats.

The Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist Party secured 78 seats, followed by the Maoist Center with 32 seats.

The RSP, AJP, Janata Dal and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Socialist Party won 20, 14, 12 and 10 seats respectively. A party needs the support of at least 138 members of the House of Representatives to form a government.

The Nepal Communist Party-UML is the second largest party in parliament and will be the main alliance in the new government led by Prachanda.
