Bhubaneswar, Nov 14 (IANS) Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik on Friday congratulated Jai Dholakia on his by-election victory and expressed hope that the newly elected BJP MLA will bring meaningful development in Nuapada.

In an indirect reference to allegations of misuse and manipulation of government machinery by the ruling BJP during the recently concluded Nuapada by-election, the BJD supremo also reiterated that it is the responsibility of institutions like the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure free and fair elections in the country.
The opposition leader further said that BJD will continue its fight to maintain the rights of the people of Odisha.
Patnaik further said, “BJD has seen many ups and downs, yet our resolve to fight for the people has been and will remain unwavering. Our party is inspired by fighter Biju Babu. Our fight for the rights of the people of #Odisha will continue.”
The former CM also thanked all the BJD leaders and workers for working tirelessly and giving their all for the party during the Nuapada by-election.
The BJD supremo said, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to every leader, every worker and every supporter of @bjd_odisha who stood united, worked tirelessly and gave everything for BJD in the Nuapada by-election. Your commitment and spirit is the true strength of our party.”
Notably, BJP candidate Jai Dholakia, who secured a total of 1,23,869 votes, defeated Congress candidate Ghasiram Majhi by a margin of 83,748 votes.
This is the highest victory margin among all the eight by-elections held along with the Bihar Assembly elections.
BJD candidate Snehangini Chhuria stood third with 38,408 votes. The BJP wrested the Nuapada seat from the BJD, increasing its tally to 79 in the 147-member state assembly.
