NASA says three asteroids will narrowly pass by Earth today; check speed, size, and more

Just yesterday, three asteroids narrowly passed by Earth. While none of them are considered “potentially hazardous asteroids,” the largest of them is 150 feet across, almost as big as an airplane. The close proximity of objects such as asteroids and comets is a reminder of their dangerous potential and the need to continuously monitor their trajectories. NASA, with the help of its advanced ground- and space-based satellites, has revealed three asteroids expected to pass by Earth today (March 28).

Asteroid 2024 EO3: Details

NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) is responsible for calculating the trajectories of celestial bodies such as asteroids and comets. It also calculates the probability of impact from these objects. CNEOS has named the first asteroid expected to pass Earth today asteroid 2024 EO3. It is estimated to be only 3.8 million kilometers away from Earth. The space agency said it is orbiting the sun at a speed of 41,166 kilometers per hour.

In terms of size, it’s about 120 feet wide, almost as big as an airplane! It belongs to the Apollo group of near-Earth asteroids, which are space rocks that pass through the Earth and have a semi-major axis that is larger than the Earth’s major axis. These asteroids are named after the giant 1862 Apollo asteroid, which was discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth in the 1930s.

Asteroid 2024 FN1: Details

The second asteroid expected to pass Earth today has been named 2024 FN1 by CNEOS. During the close approach, it will have reached a distance of 6.1 million kilometers and is already orbiting at a speed of 23,748 kilometers per hour.

In terms of size, asteroid 2024 FN1 is smaller than asteroid 2024 EO3, but is still as large as an airplane. Its width is 67 feet. NASA says it also belongs to the Apollo asteroid group.

Asteroid 2024 ES4: Details

The last asteroid to pass by the Earth today is named asteroid 2024 ES4, and it is expected to pass by a distance of nearly 6.7 million kilometers from the Earth. It is observed to be orbiting at a speed of 18,474 kilometers per hour.

According to NASA, it belongs to the Amor group of near-Earth asteroids, which are near-Earth asteroids orbiting outside the Earth but inside Mars, named after the asteroid 1221 discovered by Belgian astronomer E. Delporte. Amor named. 1932.

Although these asteroids will fly close to Earth, they are not expected to impact the Earth’s surface and cause any damage to life or property.
