'Mutual adjustment': BJP's Suvendu Adhikari on arrest of Sandeshkhali accused Sheikh Shahjahan

West Bengal Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari questioned the arrest of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan, saying, “This is not an arrest; this is a mutual adjustment.”

“Bhaskar Mukherjee (DIG, Malda Range), overturned him (Sheikh Shahjahan) in the car and then took him to Bhushi Ratil. This is not an arrest, it is a mutual adjustment. Unless the central agencies take him into their custody, People will not get justice there. There is no protection from the court and this is not an interlocutory stay. This misconception has been created by TMC leaders and the police. I am saying again and again that this is not an arrest, this is not an arrest. Mutual Adjustment,” Suvendu Adhikari said.

The LOP’s statements added layers of controversy over the arrest, with the officer alleging that Shahjahan would get “5-star facilities in the jail”.

Suvendu Adhikari said, “He will get 5-star facilities in the jail. He will use his mobile phone inside and control the area from there. He will be involved in illegal activities and fraud from inside the jail.”

Amid tension in Sandeshkhali, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested by the West Bengal Police this morning on charges of ‘sexual harassment and land grabbing’, officials said.

Shahjahan was arrested from Minakhan in North 24 Parganas district,” Minakhan SDPO Aminul Islam Khan told ANI.

He will be produced in Basirhat court at 2 pm today.”

Shahjahan had been evading arrest by state and central agencies for more than a month.

Massive protests have been taking place this month in Sandeshkhali in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district against senior TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh as a section of women demanded justice against the alleged atrocities committed by the TMC leader.

A large number of women in Sandeshkhali had accused Shajahan Shaikh and his close associates of forceful land grab and sexual harassment.

The arrest comes three days after the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court ordered the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan in the Sandeshkhali case.

Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari is visiting Sandeshkhali along with BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh after being granted permission to visit the area by the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court allowed six members of an independent fact-finding team of the Centre, led by a former Patna High Court judge, to visit the battlefield Sandeshkhali on Friday.

The six-member team, headed by former Chief Justice of Patna High Court Justice Narasimha Reddy, also included fellow members Charu Bali Khanna, Bhavana Bajaj, OP Vyas, Rajpal Singh, Aparna Banerjee and Bandana Biswas.

The fact-finding team is going to visit Majherpara, Natunpara and Naskarpara areas in Sandeshkhali.

The HC bench of Justice Kaushik Chandra also allowed opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari to visit Sandeshkhali on Thursday on the condition that he does not make any inflammatory remarks during his visit.
