Alex Murdaugh, a South Carolina attorney who was convicted of murdering his wife and son in a high-profile trial last year, was sentenced Monday to 40 years in prison for financial crimes.
Murdo, 55, the scion of an elite family of judges and lawyers, was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his wife Maggie and 22-year-old son Paul at the family hunting estate in June 2021.
Murdaugh pleaded guilty last year to charges of stealing millions of dollars from clients of his high-profile personal injury firm and was sentenced to 27 years in prison.
He was back in court Monday to be sentenced on federal charges of conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud and money laundering.
District Judge Richard Gergel sentenced Murdaugh to 40 years in prison, to be served concurrently with the 27 years he had already been sentenced.
Murdaugh pleaded guilty to federal charges in September, with U.S. Attorney Adair Boroughs saying at the time that the disbarred lawyer’s “financial crimes were widespread, brazen and callous.”
“He stole indiscriminately from his clients, his law firm and others who trusted him,” Bolles said.
Murdaugh’s murder trial last year was a three-week televised trial that captivated audiences at home and abroad.
Evidence from his son’s mobile phone showed Murdo was the only person with them in the estate’s kennels minutes before Maggie was killed with an assault rifle and Paul with a shotgun.
Murdaugh has denied killing his wife and young son but admitted to stealing millions of dollars from law firm clients to fund opioid addictions.
Even before the trial ended, Netflix and HBO rushed to release documentaries about the case.
