Murder suspect arrested at Heathrow Airport hours after London man hit and killed by car

A murder suspect has been arrested at Heathrow Airport hours after a man was hit and killed by a car in east London, police said.

The Metropolitan Police were called to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Barking Road, Newham, at 5.11am on Sunday.

Police administered first aid to the 35-year-old pedestrian, who was found injured at the scene near the intersection with Aragon Road.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, he died a short time later.

A 33-year-old man was arrested at Heathrow Airport on suspicion of murder at around 3.30pm on Sunday.

A 30-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both of them remain in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, who is leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts are with the victim’s family who face an extremely difficult time.

“They will be supported by our family liaison officers as our investigation continues.

“I know a number of people attended an event in Barking Road last night and many people witnessed the incident. I would appeal to those people to come forward immediately. Your information may be vital to the investigation.

“Forensic collision investigators have been working at the scene throughout the day and although we do not believe there is any risk to the wider community, officers will remain in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting CAD 1281/24Mar.
