Atal Settu, India’s largest sea bridge, was opened to the public by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month and has so far collected Rs 1,395 crore in toll revenue from about 8.13 lakh vehicles.

Data exclusively obtained by News18 shows that 8,13,774 vehicles used the mammoth bridge between January 12 and February 13 this year. The total toll collected during the period was Rs.13,95,85,310. The data also showed that about 797,000 vehicles used the sea lanes last month.

It is expected that these vehicles and multi-axle vehicles will use the bridge heavily, but according to the data, their numbers will be smaller compared to cars. In addition to 5,709 (4 to 6) multi-axle vehicles, only 21 oversized vehicles use this sea channel. A total of 2,172 three-axle vehicles as well as 4,778 private buses and trucks and about 3,516 minibuses use Atal Setu.

In the first month, Atal Setu earned the highest revenue from Fast Tags — Rs 13,70,96,815. The cash toll collected on the bridge of the same span is Rs 87,04,925. At the toll plaza, motorists were fined Rs 1,50,99,160 for not having fast tags on their vehicles. The MMRDA also collects Rs 62,16,430 from motorists whose express tags are not activated and have to pay the toll in cash.

Information shows that 368 high-speed cameras recorded about 1,200 vehicles traveling 100 kilometers over the speed limit. A Sedan class vehicle continued forward, reaching a speed of 195 on Setu. Although authorities did not reveal details of the vehicle, it was recommended not to exceed the 100km/h speed limit.

Of the vehicles caught speeding on camera, 20% had traveled between 125 and 170 kilometers. The MMRDA has shared this information along with the driver’s details with the traffic police, who will now take further action as per the law.

The control room monitors the speed of all vehicles 24×7. Since advanced cameras mounted on the bridge constantly monitor the speed of vehicles, drivers have no chance of slowing down near the cameras and then speeding past them. The MMRDA has installed six helpline loudspeakers on the bridge so that motorists can seek help in case of emergency.
