Mumbai police on Tuesday intercepted a vessel from Kuwait in the Arabian Sea near the gateway to India. Police launched an investigation after intercepting the boat carrying three people. The ship was inspected after anchoring at the Gateway of India.

On the face of it, nothing suspicious was found on board.

It is understood that the Sumaram Chaitrali vessel was on routine maritime patrol from India Gate to Lighthouse area on Tuesday when it noticed a suspicious movement of a vessel in front of Sassoon Jetty in Sankhok area.

A Mumbai Police team swung into action and intercepted the boat, which was later identified as belonging to Kuwait and named Abdullah Sharif 1.

The three have been identified as natives of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. They are currently in police custody at Colaba police station.

Mumbai police said the boat has been seized and a case has been registered. Police added that further investigations were ongoing.

The incident raised concerns about safety lapses at sea. In 2008, 10 Pakistani terrorists entered India by sea and launched a terrorist attack in Mumbai.
