A 28-year-old chartered accountant lost Rs 6.72 lakh after his credit and debit cards were stolen after he left his personal belongings behind while playing cricket at Cross Maidan in south Mumbai, police said on Tuesday.

Based on the complaint, Azad Maidan police station has registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act in connection with the incident that occurred on March 30, an official said.

The complainant, Vivek Dave, who came to Cross Maidan to play cricket, changed into gear and left his belongings in his bag, which included a wallet containing credit and debit cards and a mobile phone.

The officer said Mr Dave contacted a shop where the accused had used his card to purchase jewelery and the shop owner sent him CCTV footage of the accused.

Investigations are ongoing to identify the accused, he added.
