Previously, it was expected that Nintendo’s next-generation console, popularly known as the Nintendo Switch 2, would launch this year in 2024. However, it has now reportedly been postponed to “early 2025”.
Multiple new reports from Bloomberg, Eurogamer, and VGC indicate that the Nintendo Switch 2, which is expected to replace the current Nintendo Switch LCD and OLED models, has a new release window. Additionally, VGC also stated that Nintendo may be waiting for more first-party exclusive games to launch alongside it.
VGC reported: “Two development sources VGC spoke to on Friday said they are working on Switch 2 games scheduled for release early next year, but could not confirm whether this meant the launch of the console itself was later than expected.”
Last year, reports suggested that Nintendo was “secretly” providing access to the Switch 2 to certain media outlets. During these sessions, attendees had the opportunity to play an enhanced version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, showcasing improved fidelity as well as additional gameplay demos.
Additionally, Nintendo’s recent patent filing provides insight into what the Nintendo Switch 2 could potentially look like. The patent describes a design that differs from the Joy-Con ones. Instead, the console features a new layout with a joystick on the left side of the handheld and four buttons on the right. The top may retain its shoulder buttons, but notably, the home button appears to have been relocated to the bottom.
