  • After winning the first World Food Prize in 1987, Swaminathan established the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai.

  • He served as Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research from 1972 to 1979 and as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute from 1982 to 1988. Swaminathan also served as principal secretary in the agriculture department in 1979.
