Not only will IPL 2024 kick off Friday’s high-stakes clash between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, but the iconic Dhoni will hand over captaincy To Ruturaj Gaikwad, it will also bring a new dawn to the defending champion.
Dhoni is expected to retire at the end of this season and the unexpected move, a day before the start of the new season, appears to be to smooth the transition.
But apart from the emotional maelstrom surrounding Dhoni handing over the captaincy to Gaikwad, CSK and RCB will also have to find early answers to some deep questions as they try to enter rarefied territory.
Super Kings are a five-time champions and a sixth title would take them into territory that no team has entered so far, not even Mumbai Indians who also have five IPL trophies.
On the other hand, Royal Challengers, who recently won their maiden title through the Women’s Super League, will be keen to add their first IPL title to their shelf.
However, they have their own challenges to overcome.
Super Kings have been the torchbearer of IPL success under Dhoni, who has entered the final chapter of his IPL career.
