York Region Public Health has confirmed After regular monitoring in the von region, the first detection of the West Nile virus in local mosquitoes in this summer.
Officials say that a mosquito net, located near Weston Road and Rutherford Road, conducted a positive test for the virus, leading to the first confirmed case in the mosquito population of the region for 2025.
It is part of the annual West Nile Virus Control Scheme of the search sector, including trapping mosquito pools, implementing larvisides in public water sources and educating the public about prevention.
To limit mosquito breeding, public health teams are applying larvisides in regional and municipal roads as well as other stable water sources, such as roadside gaps.
Health officials say they will continue to monitor further signs of West Nile activity and urge the residents to be cautious in summer.
The West Nile Virus is a mosquito -borne disease that can be transmitted to humans through an infected mosquito bite. While most people do not experience mild or any symptoms, the virus can cause serious illness in some cases, especially in older adults or people with weak immune systems.
