Missionary University judge dies: Murder case registered against unidentified person

The death of a civil judge in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district, whose body was found hanging in her dormitory following a complaint lodged by her father, has been registered as a murder case against unidentified persons, a police officer said on Sunday.

The body of 27-year-old Civil Judge (Junior Division) Jyotsna Rai was found on Saturday. She was suspected of committing suicide and a suicide note was found.

However, the police officer said the father, who arrived at Budaun on Saturday evening, claimed that unknown persons had killed his daughter and hung the body from the ceiling fan in her bedroom. Ashok Kumar Rai said his daughter was very brave and gave justice to people, adding that she could not commit suicide.

Based on the complaint lodged by him, a case was registered under Section 302 (murder) of IPC, police said. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Alok Priyadarshi said a team of three doctors conducted an autopsy on the body and the report revealed that it was a case of antemortem hanging.

The SSP said a detailed investigation into the matter is on. Jyotsna Rai from Mau district was appointed as Budaun Civil Judge (junior judge) from April 29 last year. Earlier, she served as Judicial Magistrate in Ayodhya.
