Delhi Police on Sunday found the body of ACP Yashpal Singh’s son Lakshya Chauhan in a canal near Samalkha area of Haryana. Chauhan was missing since January 22. The same day, the police also arrested the main accused – Vikas Bhardwaj – and recovered the car in which he had fled.

The 26-year-old practicing lawyer had gone to Sonipat on January 22 with his two friends Vikas Bhardwaj and Abhishek.

While Abhishek was an acquaintance of Chauhan, Bhardwaj was working as a clerk for another lawyer at Tis Hazari court, where the deceased also practiced.

However, when Chauhan did not return home by January 23, his father – Yashpal Singh – ACP (Operations) Outer Delhi lodged a missing complaint. After this the search operation was started.

While the investigation was underway, the police suspected foul play in her disappearance and the missing complaint was converted into a kidnapping FIR.

The first arrest in the case was made on January 26. Police picked up 19-year-old Abhishek from his house near Narela for questioning.

Based on his statement, Abhishek was arrested and additional charges of sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) were framed in the FIR for kidnapping.

Abhishek had told the police that Bhardwaj had called him on January 22 to attend a wedding with him and Chauhan in Sonipat.

After this, Bhardwaj along with Abhishek conspired to murder Chauhan over a long-running financial dispute. She later told how Chauhan had borrowed some money from her but was not returning it.

Chauhan’s body has been recovered after a week-long search operation. Police said that further investigation of the case is going on.
