A Democratic Minnesota state senator was arrested Monday on suspicion of burglarizing a home. USA Today informed of.

Nicole Mitchell was found inside a home in Detroit Lakes, four hours away from Woodbury, which she represents.

Mitchell, 49, was arrested after the homeowner reported the theft around 4:45 p.m.

When police arrived they found a woman inside. Mitchell is being held in the Baker County Jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary.

Mitchell previously worked as a meteorologist in the United States Army and with Minnesota Public Radio. She was elected to the Senate from the St. Paul district in 2022.

She still serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard, where she commands a weather unit.

Police have declined to share any details about the suspected theft.

County property tax records show Mitchell’s stepmother and her late father lived on the block where the alleged theft occurred.

The Senate Democratic Caucus said in a statement that it was “aware of the situation and will not comment pending further information.”

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mark Johnson of East Grand Forks said he was shocked and knew very few details.

“The public expects lawmakers to meet high standards of conduct,” Johnson said in a statement. “As information comes to light, we expect to see results in action both in court and in his role in the legislature.”
