Microsoft Teams has a streamlined look that combines personal and work accounts; stay up to date

In a major move, Microsoft is streamlining its approach to communication and collaboration with a unified version of Microsoft Teams that seamlessly accommodates personal and work accounts. This development aims to simplify the user experience and increase productivity by eliminating the need for separate applications. The unified app, currently in testing, promises to revolutionize the way users interact between different account types.

The unified Teams app is currently being tested in the latest Windows 11 Insider build, is expected to enter preview mode for commercial users in April, and is scheduled to be officially released with Windows 11 24H2 later this year.

Teams has long been a cornerstone meeting and chat platform for enterprises, but with the release of Windows 11, Teams has hit a wall. Microsoft’s attempt to position Teams as a comprehensive communications solution for personal use resulted in the creation of two separate applications – one for personal use and one for personal use. Another for work or school – each with a unique layout and functionality.

New Teams App

In response to feedback from users in both the personal and professional realms, Microsoft launched a new Teams app in a blog post on Wednesday that aims to address preferences for a unified platform. The upcoming app will enable users to seamlessly navigate between different accounts, eliminating the need to juggle multiple apps at once.

Once launched, users can easily access and manage different accounts simply by selecting their profile picture in the upper right corner. Joining meetings will be streamlined and users will be able to select their desired account upon entry without even having to log in before.

Notifications in Teams will provide a clear indication of linked accounts, and personal account notifications will provide enhanced details to respond directly from the notification banner.

The app was originally labeled “Microsoft Teams (work or school)” during the preview phase and will transition to the simplified name “Microsoft Teams” in subsequent releases. At the same time, the standalone consumer version called “Microsoft Teams (Free)” will be phased out from Windows.

While there may be some differences between the preview version and the current free, work, or school editions, these differences will be eliminated by the time Teams becomes generally available to all business users in May. The transition process for business and IT administrators is expected to be seamless, requiring no installation of additional applications and maintaining continuity with existing user accounts.
