Michelin-starred chef's space dinner worth $500,000

SpaceVIP isn’t the first business to offer dining opportunities in space.

Food and space enthusiasts with deep pockets will soon be able to enjoy fine dining in the stratosphere. At least if they’re willing to pay nearly $500,000 a ticket. In less than 24 hours after the itinerary was announced, many people have asked where to sign up.

Luxury space travel company SpaceVIP has hired a Danish chef from a Michelin-starred restaurant for a six-hour high-tech space hot air balloon ride that will debut next year.

Rasmus Munk will create menus for six guests who will travel to an altitude of 100,000 feet (30 kilometers). Here they will dine and watch the sunrise over the curvature of the Earth, with the ship’s Wi-Fi allowing them to livestream to friends back home.

The menu has not yet been finalized, but in an interview with Bloomberg, the 32-year-old chef said he hopes the dishes will be as innovative as the journey itself, which will include aerogel-inspired foods and encapsulated aromas. He is the chef at Denmark’s Alchemist restaurant, ranked fifth in the 2023 World’s 50 Best Restaurants guide.

Monk said that despite the price, there were more people interested in the first trip than the spacecraft could accommodate.

“We know this is an expensive first-time trip. But this is the first time these gastronomic experiences have been offered on board,” said Monk, who himself will be taking part in the trip. He said the plan is to organize more tours in the future and lower prices so more people can enjoy the experience.

The spacecraft, built by Space Perspectives, does not require any training or special equipment, according to a statement. The pressurized capsule will be lifted by a space balloon developed by NASA rather than a rocket. Test flights will begin next month.

SpaceVIP isn’t the first business to offer dining opportunities in space. Last year, France-based company Zephalto announced it wanted to offer people the chance to dine on a balloon at the edge of the stratosphere starting in 2025, for a price of at least $132,000.
