Melting ice and snow caused river levels to rise, flooding more than 10,000 homes across Russia

Ural river level rises several meters due to meltwater

Moscow:

Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said more than 10,400 homes in Russia were flooded as rapidly melting snow on some of Europe’s largest rivers sent water levels in the Ural Mountains to record highs.

The Ural river, which rises in the Ural Mountains and flows into the Caspian Sea, rose several meters in just a few hours due to meltwater on Friday, breaching a dam embankment in the city of Orsk, 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) east of Moscow.

Flooding was also reported in Siberia, the Volga River and central Russia.

“Temperatures are expected to rise, snow cover will be active and rivers will open,” Russia’s Emergency Ministry said. “More than 10,400 residential buildings in 39 regions are still flooded.”
