The Duchess of Sussex has revealed she received “hateful” abuse on social media when she was pregnant with her two children, describing it as “cruel”.
While appearing on a panel at the SXSW conference in Texas to mark International Women’s Day, Meghan was asked how she deals with the “endless toxicity” online.
The duchess said she was now “distanced” from social media “for my well-being” but added that she suffered “much of the bullying and abuse that I experienced” while pregnant with Archie and Lilibet “.
and prince harry Meghan, who was sitting in the front row of the meeting, said: “You just have to think about it and think about why people are so hateful.
“It’s not mean, it’s cruel. Why would you do this when you’re pregnant, or as a mother, in such a tender and sacred moment?”
She added: “You can succumb to it, or almost succumb to the pain of it.
“Or maybe it’s because I’m pregnant and that mammalian instinct kicks in and do whatever it takes to protect your child and therefore yourself.”
Prince Archie was born in May 2019, while Princess Lilibet was born in California in June 2021 after the Sussexes moved to the United States.
Meghan, described by event organizers as a “visionary leader of women”, appeared on a panel that included actress Brooke Shields, 58.
“Your voice is not small, it just needs to be heard,” Meghan said after explaining how she campaigned for sexist advertising to be changed at the age of 11.
The 42-year-old added: “It’s funny looking back now because you had a much bigger impact before social media – just an 11-year-old kid with a pen and paper – but it shows what if When you know there’s an issue and you use your voice to advocate for what’s right, it really resonates with people.”
Recalling her starring role in the 1978 film Pretty Baby, Shields jokingly responded: “That’s one of the things that set us apart – when I was 11, I played a prostitute.”
