Paramount Universal, the US media group that owns CBS News, will lay off about 800 employees, or about 3% of its workforce. The move comes two days after CBS’ Super Bowl 58 became the most-watched television show in history, The Guardian reported.

Paramount CEO Bob Bakish announced the move in an internal memo on Tuesday.

The announcement comes just hours after CBS revealed that Sunday’s broadcast of the annual league championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers averaged 123.4 million viewers across all platforms.

In an internal memo obtained by The Guardian, Bakish expressed his gratitude to those at the company who were parting ways. “Your talents help us advance our mission of unleashing the power of content around the world. We are a better company because of you,” he said.

“While I realize these changes will never be easy… I believe this is the right decision for our future. These adjustments will help us build momentum and execute our strategic vision for the year ahead – and I firmly believe we have A lot to be excited about,” he added.

ABC7 Chicago reports that Paramount Universal has decided to lay off employees in an effort to reduce costs and increase revenue.

In addition to the Paramount Pictures film studio, Paramount Worldwide owns television networks including MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and UK Channel 5; as well as the Paramount+ and Pluto streaming platforms.
