mason mount Manchester United have been challenged to go ahead 2-1 on Sunday Premier League Win at Crystal Palace and qualify for the Champions League In this weather.
United bounced back from a shock home defeat to 10-man Everton in south London following second-half goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mount.
This result gave them four wins from seven matches. Reuben Amorim And seventh-placed United are just four points behind rivals Manchester City Ahead of a busy December of domestic action.
“I’ve felt good throughout the season. Pre-season has been good for me. I’ve been working hard in training every week and not just me, but we as a group,” Mount said after two injury-hit campaigns at Old Trafford.
“It’s been ups and downs, but we’re (both) in a much better position, me individually and us as a group. We really need to step up now and win more games.
“That’s the most important thing, to win. Obviously there was a tough result in the last game, but it was extremely important to come back and win. It’s really time to move on now and try for that top-four finish.”
United looked anything but a European team at half-time after a one-sided first half on Sunday, where Palace took a one-goal advantage through Jean-Philippe Mateta’s 36th-minute penalty.
After Palace missed several promising starts, Amorim’s side returned with better intent in the second period and a brilliant goal by Zirkzee in the 54th minute was followed by Mount’s smart finish nine minutes later.
Mount remained on the pitch during the final exchanges to complete 90 minutes in the Premier League for the first time since a 1–0 win over Palace for Chelsea at the start of 2023.
He added, “It feels like it’s been so long! It’s been very positive for me too and I’ve been working hard lately. I’m feeling really good too.”
“I mean, I haven’t done that in a while, but I definitely think, lately I’ve been able to do that, but whether I’m starting on the bench or starting in a game, you have to have the same mentality of impacting the game.”
Amorim’s half-time message, according to Mount, was to “stay calm”, with big emphasis on the possibility of fatigue at Palace after Thursday’s Conference League match at Strasbourg.
It paid off as – after Zirkzee’s equaliser – Mount grabbed his second goal of the campaign with a curled effort following Bruno Fernandes’s quick free-kick to build momentum ahead of Thursday’s visit of West Ham.
“(Amorim) was saying keep going. Stay calm and we know what we need to do. We all know what we need to do in that second half,” Mount said.
“Obviously it’s hard to go down to one zero but it showed character to come back into it.
“I was very excited to see it hit the back of the net, score and most importantly get three points for the team.”
