Since then, Maruti has lost its No. 1 position in the Indian SUV market in just two months. By November, Maruti dropped to fourth place in the SUV rankings, below Mahindra, Tata and Hyundai. Discounts are available on all models except Brezza AT in December 2023.

With a wider choice of SUV models and greater production capacity, Mahindra regained the top spot from Maruti as the festive season begins in September.

Maruti gets off to a good start in 2023

At the beginning of 2023, Maruti Suzuki set a goal to double SUV sales in fiscal 2024 and occupy the leadership position in the SUV segment with a market share of more than 25%. The automaker plans to sell more than 500,000 sport utility vehicles in fiscal 2024.

The company has successfully achieved the feat of becoming a successful SUV manufacturer. Data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed that Maruti produced 33,350 units of SUVs under 4 meters in October 2023, a sharp increase from 9,915 units in October 2022. In this segment, the company offers vehicles like Fronx, Brezza, Grand Vitara and Jimny models.

Maruti’s SUV segment gradually wanes

While Maruti Suzuki’s domestic SUV sales grew by 24% year-on-year, Mahindra & Mahindra’s growth rate was even higher at 39%. Mahindra, known for SUVs such as Thar, Scorpio and XUV, has several SUVs in its lineup. Sales will hit a record high in 2023, with monthly sales growth ranging from 20% to 57%.
