Well, I certainly didn’t expect to see this today…

Mark Cuban testified to Congress about the state of prescription drugs in America and not only announced that his company, Cost Plus Drugs, would integrate with TrumpRx, but he also gave TrumpRx high praise:

“We will be working with TrumpRx.

I mean, it’s incredible. This is amazing.

This is the most incredible show ever.

“We are excited to offer them our API so that everyone benefits when prices come down.”

Now I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I think these two guys are best friends now…obviously not.

I also believe that Mark Cuban was probably intentionally overdoing it to be a little sarcastic.

And yes, they clearly have a vested interest in partnering to make their business more successful.

I got all that.

I’m not wearing rose-colored glasses.

But putting all that aside for a minute, I’ll pause a moment and appreciate the good comments at face value:

Thank you Mr Chairman. Uh, thank you all for coming here today and talking about a topic that is so important to all Americans across the country – and as Dr. Smith said, an out-of-control health care system, which it is.

Innovative companies like Mister Cuban, Cost Plus Drugs have already proven that bypassing traditional PBMs can yield real savings at the pharmacy counter. President Trump has announced Trump RX, a new website to connect patients directly to the best prices. How Can Trump RX and the Direct Patient Program Improve Affordability for Patients? Your core – why are you doing this?

Mark Cuban:
Yeah, I mean, we’ll work with Trump RX. I mean, it’s incredible. This is amazing. This is the most incredible show ever.

And so, we’re excited to offer them our API so they can download our daily prices so when they go down, everyone benefits. Also, I like what they are doing with the MFN because, as I mentioned in my comments, our brand drugs are more expensive because of the PBMs involved.

And with the Trump Rx and MFN program, which allows manufacturers to work around PBMs and go directly to patients. So, I think it will save senior citizens – it will save everybody a lot of money.

chairman:
Do you think this is the future?

Mark Cuban:
Umm, I don’t think this solves the ultimate problem of designing the system, but I think it’s something we obviously agree on because that’s the cost plus drugs. We publish our entire price list every day.

chairman:
Your company posts drug prices with full cost details. How does this transparency help patients save money?

Mark Cuban:
I mean, you know, with CostPlusDrugs.com, any patient can see the price of their medication, and so there’s no uncertainty.

But more importantly, seeing our only 15% markup and seeing our costs, builds trust. I always tell everyone at my company that what we really sell in this industry is trust. And so I think that’s what’s really allowed us to grow so quickly.

chairman:
So if you sold Ozempic and someone else went through a PBM, how much cost would they save?

Mark Cuban:
Well, if you look at what’s happening now where PBMs work with sponsors, they’re typically charged $1,300. And if you look at the direct-to-consumer programs being offered by Novo and Lilly, it’s $499 or less and possibly falling.

So there is already a significant difference. And the strange thing is that the $800 difference usually goes straight into the pocket of the PBM, who then decides how much they want to give the employer.

So it’s been – it’s a huge amount at the moment.
