Delhi police have arrested a man they allegedly shot dead after a brief exchange of fire with a taxi driver near the Red Fort on Sunday, a police officer said.
The man, Firoz, allegedly shot and killed a taxi driver after a brief argument on April 15, police said.
“On Sunday, we received information about Firoz’s whereabouts, which led to a confrontation with the police,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) MK Meena said.
When Firoz was asked to surrender, he fired at the police.
“The police also retaliated in self-defence. The accused sustained injuries on his left leg. He was immediately rushed to Aruna Asif Ali Hospital for treatment,” the DCP said.
Around midnight on April 15, 36-year-old taxi driver Mohammad Sakib, a resident of Zakir Nagar, was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, along with Palwal. Resident, 15-year-old beggar Luv Khush. Saqib later gave in.
During investigation, it was found that his Maruti Wagon-R collided with an e-rickshaw at Chatta Rail red light around 12 am.
The scooter overturned, leading to an altercation between him and the driver. The argument led to a confrontation and three men attacked Saqib. During the melee, his cell phone was stolen and his pockets were picked.
When the attackers tried to escape, Saqib grabbed one of them, who shot him and fled.
On Wednesday, police arrested three people, including a 24-year-old woman, Ruksar. The other two are 19-year-old Sajid and 24-year-old Salman.
