Noida police have arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly committing thefts at several houses and vehicles while feigning hearing and speech impairment to evade suspicion and arrest, officials said.
Ruthra Venkatesan, who hails from Tamil Nadu, was arrested by officials of Bisrakh police station near D-Mart on Sunday, they said.
A police spokesman said: “Based on electronic surveillance and technical evidence, the defendant was captured and nine stolen laptops, nine laptop bags, three laptop chargers and a knife were recovered from him.”
The official said he stole items from homes and vehicles and feigned hearing and speech impairments.
A letter was also seized from his possession which read “Appeal: the holder of this application is stupid”, the spokesman said.
He added: “During interrogation, the defendant told police that he used to pretend to be deaf and mute and steal so that no one would suspect him.”
Police said the man had been investigated for theft and possession of stolen property and had been sent to jail.
