A 30-year-old man was caught red-handed while fleeing with a woman’s mobile phone near Niti Aayog in the Parliament Street area, police said on Saturday.

According to police, the incident occurred outside the main entrance of Niti Ayog on Friday afternoon.

Devesh Kumar Mahla, deputy commissioner of police, New Delhi, said the victim, Sheetal, was crossing the road in front of Niti Aayog with her husband and friends. , was attacked by a robber.

The accused, later identified as Asif, said he snatched Sheetal’s mobile phone and tried to escape as the trio chased him.

The robbers again fled after hitting Sheetal, however, the entire commotion was noticed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Abhinendra Jain, who along with Assistant Sub-Inspector Ravinder and Superintendent of Police Suh Sukhveer passes by on the street together.

“They took immediate action and arrested Asif on the spot and recovered the phone,” Mahla said.

After the local police were alerted, Jain, who was stationed in South District, handed him over to the police.

Police said the entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed at the main entrance of Niti Aayog.

During interrogation, Asif told police that he was accompanied by his accomplice Mohammad Shahbaz, who managed to escape.

Mohammad Shahbaz was later arrested from east Delhi at Asif’s behest.

Police said the two accused were booked under sections 392 (robbery) and 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen goods) and further interrogated.
